Three Republican representatives from Ohio have jointly written a letter to the state advocating for the legalisation of internet casinos and iLottery, citing it as a "net benefit" to Ohio.
Ohio Sports Betting Representatives Jay Edwards, Jeff LaRe, and Cindy Abrams advocated for the legalisation of igaming, encompassing internet casinos and lotteries. Online sports wagering has been legalised and operational in Ohio since January 2023.
The speakers stated, “Although the state must approach any expansion of this scale with prudence and diligence, these forms of gaming can prosper with minimal effect on our existing system, provided there is an appropriate regulatory framework.”
The letter is included in a report from a study committee released on Friday, July 12, regarding the future of gaming in Ohio. A report from PlayUSA indicates that the study commission convened four times, including one session on online casinos in February. The majority of the 354-page report consists of written testimony submitted during the hearings.
Will legal igaming legislation be enacted in 2025?
The correspondence from House Republicans may indicate the introduction of the inaugural Ohio online casino legislation in the upcoming year. It acknowledged the "significant potential" in legalising internet casinos and iLottery.
The letter stated, “Examining other states that have adopted either or both iLottery and iGaming, we observe substantial increases in tax revenues due to heightened participation, while in-person sales have also continued to rise.”
“This can primarily be attributed to an increased number of individuals engaging in the market via their mobile devices and becoming more adept and informed about participating in a physical setting.”
Although over 25 states permit legal digital sports betting, legislators have encountered greater challenges in legalising internet gambling. Seven states provide online gambling services.
